Can I Get Married Online?

What parts of the marriage process can be done remotely, and why the actual legal marriage ceremony in Australia still has to happen in person.

The short answer: no

You cannot get legally married online in Australia.

Under Australian law, the actual marriage ceremony must happen with:

  • both parties physically present
  • the celebrant physically present
  • both witnesses physically present

That means no legal marriage by Zoom, no proxy marriage, and no fully online courthouse-style process.

What can be done remotely?

Quite a lot of the planning can still happen remotely. For example:

  • you can enquire through the website
  • you can discuss dates and options by email
  • you can prepare the NOIM
  • parts of NOIM witnessing can now be done remotely in some circumstances when handled lawfully by an authorised celebrant
  • you can organise documents before arriving on the Gold Coast

What cannot be done remotely?

The marriage ceremony itself cannot be remote. You still need:

  • both parties there in person
  • the celebrant there in person
  • both witnesses there in person
  • the legal wording spoken in person

What if we live overseas?

If you are overseas but planning to marry on the Gold Coast:

  • you can often start the paperwork remotely
  • you can ask about NOIM witnessing options
  • you can organise documents before travel
  • you still need to be physically present in Australia for the ceremony
